The Priesthood of All Believers: 1st Century Church Life in the 21st Century
(Paperback) by Milt Rodriguez (Author) "http://www.amazon.com/Priesthood-All-Believers-Century-Church/dp/097499250X/ref=sr_1_1/002-7536434-2928852?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1183491417&sr=8-1"
In this revolutionary book, Milt Rodriguez has us
take a new look at both the wine and the wineskin. The dynamic life of God’s
own Son cannot be contained within the rigid walls of the religious system. Milt
pulls back the scales from our eyes to enable us to see God’s eternal purpose
and goal. Then he uses the picture of the priesthood to show us the difference
between the levitical priesthood and the eternal priesthood of Melchizedek. The
order of Melchizedek operates by the power of an endless life! Life always
determines form.
God’s goal is that the fulness of Christ would be
expressed through His body. This cannot happen with our present day church
practices. A revolution must take place where the centrality of Jesus Christ is
supreme and every member of the body functions under His direct headship. Milt
shows us how this can be possible in our present day situation. This book will
not only shake your thoughts on church life, it will challenge you to take the
torch of radical church reform into the 21st century!

The Lambeth Quadrilateral and the Free Churches
II. The Lambeth Quadrilateral and the Free Churches of England.—The Appeal, reaching the Federal Council of the Free Churches of England, was primarily acted upon 1921–25 by a Joint Conference between the Council's representatives of the Baptist, Congregational, Moravian, Presbyterian, Primitive Methodist, United Methodist, and Wesleyan bodies and a committee appointed by the two archbishops of England, the archbishops themselves being included. The deliberations were suspended by the Archbishop of Canterbury, 1925, that 'full opportunity might be given to the Churches to study and understand the documents already submitted' and the Federal Council's committee dismissed.(2258) The Free Churches then individually discussed the Quadrilateral and replied to it. In general, objection was made to the Lambeth condition of episcopal ordination as essential, to the limitations put upon the dispensation of the Lord's Supper, and to creeds as of perpetually binding force. The Baptists declared that there is 'no separated body of priests.' The Congregational Union of England and Wales denied that 'the existence of separated Churches is necessarily contrary to the mind of Christ' and affirmed that the view that the validity of the ministry depends on episcopal ordination 'ran counter to their deepest convictions.'
2258A memorandum presented June 19, 1925, by the representatives of the Anglican Church in the Joint Conference called the ministries of the Free Churches 'real ministries,' but declared, at the same time, that, though they 'may possess spiritual, reality and efficacy, due authority' did not follow. 'This matter of due authority,' it added, 'is to us one of highest importance. Spiritual efficacy is one thing, due authority is another.' See Bell. Documents II., 79. The Churches of Scotland took no part in negotiations, as they were engaged in discussions over their own consolidation. The Rev. C. C. Starbuck, writing years ago, said, 'the impression given him by the consensus of Episcopal judgment on the Historic Episcopate is that it is rather a demand for submission than a solicitation of brotherly union.'

"The New Testament know no spiritual
aristocracy or nobility, but calls all believers 'saints', though many fall
short far short of their vocation. Nor does it recognize a special priesthood in
distinction from the people, as mediating between God and the laity. It knows
only one high priest, Jesus Christ, and clearly teaches the universal priesthood
of all believers...which even to this day is not fully realized."

The Priesthood of All Believers
by David Dunlap
"On the 1st of March, 1546, a scaffold was
erected before the Castle of Saint Andrew in Scotland and foggots of dried wood
were piled around it...When all was ready two deathsmen brought George Wishart
from his prison...He knelt down and prayed before the pile; then exhorted the
people to love the word of God and to suffer patiently...as he was tied to the
stake he announced, "for the true Gospel which was given to me by the grace
of God, I suffer this day by men, not sorrowfully, but with a glad heart and
mind." (1)
Devout men of a bygone era were not characterized by the doctrinal indifference
that ofttimes plagues the present generation. These men were willing to suffer
greatly, indeed, and even die for the truths of the Word of God. The conviction
and cry of their hearts concerning biblical truth was-- "for this will I
die." One of the great doctrines for which great men of God died was the
doctrine of the priesthood of every believer. This doctrine set forth the truth
that every believer, by virtue of the death of Christ, has access into the holy
presence of God to offer up spiritual sacrifices of worship unto God. This
doctrine was a foundational truth of the Reformation, standing side by side with
solo fide (salvation by faith alone), solo scriptura (scripture alone), and solo
gratis (salvation through grace alone). These Reformers spoke loudly and boldly
concerning this truth. Martin Luther (1483-1543), that intrepid warrior, was one
who outshone other Reformers in the proclamation and the defense of this
important doctrine. In a time when the majority of Christendom opposed the
priesthood of all believers, Martin Luther stood as an impregnable fortress.
When his very life and livelihood were threatened for the truth of God"s
Word, he remained steadfast. When the scholars of the day argued that only a
trained class of ordained clergy were permitted to serve God as priests, he
stood unmoved upon the bedrock of Scripture. He declared that the Scriptures
stated that, "All Christians are altogether priests, and let it be anathema
to assert there is any other priest than he who is Christian; for it will be
asserted without the Word of God, on no authority but the sayings of men, or the
antiquity of custom, or the multitude of those that think so." (2) Ready
weapons in their defense of truth were the words of the apostle Peter and other
New Testament writers.

Is the priesthood of all believers Biblical?
Question: "Is the priesthood of all believers Biblical?"
Answer: There is one main passage that deals with the priesthood of all believers. It is as follows: "You also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ … But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light" (1 Peter 2:5-9).
Quoting further.
In summary, believers are called "kings and priests" and a "royal priesthood" as a reflection of their privileged status as heirs to the kingdom of the Almighty God and of the Lamb. Because of this privileged closeness with God, no other earthly mediator is necessary. Secondly, believers are called priests because salvation is not merely “fire insurance,” escape from hell. Rather, believers are called by God to serve Him by offering up spiritual sacrifices, i.e., being a people zealous for good works. As priests of the living God, we are all to give praise to the One who has given us the great gift of His Son's sacrifice on our behalf, and in response, to share this wonderful grace with others.

The Priesthood of the Laity.
In the New Testament every
believer is called a saint, a priest, and a king. "All Christians,"
says Luther, "are truly of the spiritual estate, and there is no difference
among them, save of office alone. As St. Paul says, we are all one body, though
each member does its own work, to serve the others. This is because we have one
baptism, alike; one gospel, one faith, and are all Christians for baptism,
gospel and faith, these alone make spiritual and Christian people." And
again: "It is faith that makes men priests, faith that unites them to
Christ, and gives them the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, whereby they become
filled with all holy grace and heavenly power. The inward anointing—this oil,
better than any that ever came from the horn of bishop or pope—gives them not
the name only, but the nature, the purity, the power of priests; and this
anointing have all they received who are believers in Christ."
This principle, consistently
carried out, raises the laity to active co-operation in the government and
administration of the church; it gives them a voice and vote in the election of
the pastor; it makes every member of the congregation useful, according to his
peculiar gift, for the general good. This principle is the source of religious
and civil liberty which flourishes most in Protestant countries. Religious
liberty is the mother of civil liberty. The universal priesthood of Christians
leads legitimately to the universal kingship of free, self-governing citizens,
whether under a monarchy or under a republic.

Quote.
The priesthood of each believer in Baptist thought is tied closely to another concept, that of soul competency. Each person has a God-given competence to know and follow God's will. A decision to follow Christ as Lord and Savior is an individual decision; no one can make it for another. Being a believer priest is a gift from God, not a human achievement; it comes with salvation.
Each believer priest is responsible for his or her own actions. Individual believers can go directly to God without the aid of any intermediary. Individuals can and should read and interpret the Bible for themselves without religious officials dictating to them what to believe.
Believer priests are all equal to one another in Christ (Galatians 3:26-28). There is only one High Priest, that is Jesus Christ (Hebrews 7:23-8:13).
Each believer priest has a responsibility to be committed to Christ and to share Christ through word and deed. As Peter stated it: to “declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light" (1 Peter 2:9 NIV).
Therefore, a church does not have only one priest. Potentially it has many who communicate the love and forgiveness of God and demonstrate concern and compassion of one believer for another.

In the days of the apostles, the calling to serve as priests was revived. Peter declared, "You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light" (1 Peter 2:9). In this case God's word has not come as a promise for the future but as a declaration for the present: "You are ... a royal priesthood."
